Assistant Director, Campus Safety (Year-Round)

This full time role provides a variety of security, safety, transportation, travel and service functions to our campus community on a 24/7 basis. Interact with students and guests from around the world as well as fellow staff and faculty.

Job Summary: The Assistant Director of Campus Safety provides support to and assists the Director of Campus Safety in the direction and oversight for all functions and activities of Interlochen’s Campus Safety, including patrolling Interlochen’s 1,200 acre campus, concert / special event traffic and parking, guest transportation needs, investigations, emergency preparedness, and other safety support services. The Assistant Director of Campus Safety executes assigned activities and fosters collaborative working relationships with other departments, outside agencies, regulatory agencies, local emergency responders and the public.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Models the Interlochen's core values and champions the mission and vision of the organization.

  • Assist with the recruitment, selection, training, scheduling, supervision and evaluation of a diverse department of security officers, in a department that operates around the clock, 365 days a year.

  • Provides effective professional liaison between internal and external stakeholders to ensure the promotion of goodwill, cooperation, and open communications between the department and the community at large.

  • Assists with training security staff in customer service expectations, patrol procedures, reporting and documentation, proper investigation techniques, campus key and lock systems, crowd management and traffic control.

  • Provide support to the Director in the planning, organization and implementation of campus wide emergency procedures, documentation, lockdown and severe weather/fire preparedness drills, recommending changes to procedures, processes, equipment, facilities.

  • Assists the Director to ensure compliance with all state and federal requirements, Homeland Security and Michigan Safe Schools requirements, mandated lockdown drills.

  • Provides consultation and support for student affairs processes as needed, including student violation of the law.

  • Interface with local, state and federal law enforcement and fire safety personnel.

  • Reviews, tracks and distributes reports of incidents for resolution by various departments that may require law enforcement, student discipline, employee discipline, etc. to the appropriate campus departments.

  • Exercise judgment in answering day to day procedural questions, who can be granted building/room access, methods to patrol campus, etc.

  • Participates in the development, administration, and documentation of the assigned budget; assists with the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, vehicles, equipment, and supplies; and assists with monitoring and approving expenditures.

  • Assists the Director to ensure the appropriate use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Complies with ICA policies/procedures and is a good steward of ICA finances.

  • Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a standard office environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact. This position also works outside and inside in varied weather conditions.

 

Required Experience:

Education:  

  • An associates degree in public safety and/or safety and environmental health, criminal justice. May substitute experience for education.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in a similar role, such as public safety or other governmental organization.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience coordinating safety work with external agencies, including but not limited to law enforcement, community partners, and emergency responders.

  • AED/CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

  • Experience in a school or campus setting is preferred.

  • Professional development and training certifications in emergency management from FEMA, NEMA or related agencies are a plus.

Equipment Familiarity:

  • Mac Laptop, Google Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Mail, Calendar), MS Office Suite

Certifications, Licenses, or Special Training: 

  • Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks. 

  • Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Demonstrated experience in emergency management and security programs, services, and emergency preparedness initiatives. 

  • Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. Ability to understand different perspectives, interact respectfully with cultures other than their own, and cultivate meaningful relationships with people with different cultural frameworks. 

  • Familiarity with protocols for communication and working with local, state, and federal law enforcement, life safety, environmental, and public health agencies.

  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents and guardians, alumni, trustees, and independent contractors.

  • Enforce policies and procedures.

  • Ability to supervise, develop, and motivate, all with a good sense of humor.  

  • Ability to build effective relationships both within and outside the institution. 

  • Unquestioned integrity supported by a positive social and business presence that can successfully represent Interlochen within and outside the community to all stakeholders. 

  • Ability to physically respond rapidly to any emergency and take appropriate leadership action. 

  • Flexible with scheduling to include some midnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.  

  • Ability to follow and execute specific verbal and written instructions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to promote and maintain positive interaction with all internal and external stakeholders.
